This video by Camera Obscura got me thinking about the difference between vintage clothing trends and period costume. This is obviously telling of my lack of fashion knowledge. I am curious how one draws the line between a costume and vintage apparel. Of course, there is the issue of creative appropriation, wherein a piece of clothing from a previous era is incorporated or otherwise adapted into a contemporary wardrobe. But what about the ladies in the video, aren’t their getups simply costume, as there does not seem to be any effort to ‘update’ their garments?
